Monitrice Services

Doulas provide emotional, physical, and educational support during pregnancy, throughout labor, and the postpartum time period.

A monitrice offers continuous labor support with some clinical skills that a doula does not but does not offer full prenatal care throughout pregnancy. A monitrice does not offer antibiotics, anti-hemorrhagic medications such as Cytotec or Pitocin, or other medications in pregnancy, labor, or postpartum.

Monitrice services include clinical skills during labor support for clients that plan to have a hospital or birth center birth, such as:

  • Continuous Labor Support

  • Monitoring mother’s vitals

  • Fetal heart rate monitoring for mothers who want to labor at home and feel the need for reassurance of basic vital signs.

  • A monitrice may also offer vaginal/cervical checks for dilation.

As a licensed midwife and CPM in Washington, I am legally qualified to offer these clinical services.

These clinical skills are offered with the understanding that the mother and her support team are still the primary responsible parties and this information is to help inform their decision making but should not be considered primary midwifery care. Concerns for fetal or maternal well-being should be addressed with the primary care provider.
